Michael A. Smart

Vice Chairman

Mr. Smart has more than 30 years of experience in private equity, portfolio management and investment banking.  He is a Partner at Dominus Capital, an operationally – focused private equity firm investing in middle market companies where he focused on Investor relations, fund raising and business development.  He most recently was a Managing Director and Advisor at MVision Private Equity Advisers focused on the origination, evaluation and diligence of new and emerging managers within the private equity sector.

He was a founding member and Managing Partner of CSW Private Equity (“CSW”).  CSW focused on investing in and raising capital for middle market growth – oriented consumer product and general industrial manufacturing & service companies.  Prior to CSW, Mr. Smart was a Principal at First Atlantic Capital (“FACL”), a private equity firm focused on investing in and raising capital for middle market buyouts and recapitalizations in the consumer and general industrial sectors. 

Prior to FACL, Mr. Smart was a Managing Director in investment banking at Merrill Lynch & Co. in the Private Equity Group where he focused on the evaluation, due diligence and coverage of private equity funds in the United States and Europe raising more than $16.6 billion in capital.  He was also a Vice President in the High Yield and Corporate Finance Group.  Earlier in his career, Mr. Smart was a founding Partner of the Carpediem Group, a mergers & acquisitions boutique, an Associate in mergers & acquisitions at Dillon Read & Co and a Lending Officer at the Bank of New York.

His other professional activities include the Board of Trustees of the Advent Guggenheim (“Claymore”) Preferred Stock and High Yield Fund (NYSE: “AVK”), where he serves on the Audit, Governance and Special Committees, and Sprint Industrial Holdings, where he serves on the Audit and Special Committees.  He previously was Chairman and CEO of Berkshire Blanket Holdings (Audit, Compensation and Special Committees), past President and Chairman of Sqwincher Holdings (Audit, Compensation and Special Committees) former Co-Chairman of H2O Plus Holdings (Audit, Compensation and Special Committees) and a Member of the Board of Directors of Country Pure Foods (Audit Committee).  Mr. Smart was previously a member of the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (“PCAOB”) Investor Advisory Group (“IAG”) and is currently the Vice Chairman of the National Association of Investment Companies (“NAIC”) representing the largest network of diverse-owned private equity firms and hedge funds in the world.

Mr. Smart’ civic activities include the Board of Directors of the Police Foundation of New Rochelle New York and the Board of the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone (UMEZ) which manages more than $240 million in community investments.  He is a Member of the Westchester County Humane Society, and a former Member of the Board of Trustees of The Mead School.  

Mr. Smart is a Member of Delta Sigma Pi Professional Business Fraternity and a Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.  Mr. Smart holds a BBA from Howard University and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania where he was a former Member of the Wharton Alumni Board of Directors.
