NAIC President & CEO Robert L. Greene talks to Andrew Junkin, Chief Investment Officer of the Virginia Retirement System (VRS). In this dialogue, Junkin reveals the inner workings of the 14th largest public pension plan in the U.S. with $105 billion in assets and 800,000 members, explains how investment decisions are made and the roles of its management and executive committees. He also shares some areas of concern – specifically exposure to commercial real estate amid a significantly altered workplace. Junkin provides an overview of the plan’s engagements with diverse managers as well. Junkin shares the challenges and benefits of instituting a “Rooney Rule” while at Wilshire Consulting and the underlying reasons most consultancies appear to not engage with diverse managers meaningfully. Finally, he provided a few leadership lessons.
