California State Teachers' Retirement System (CalSTRS) is a defined benefit program and is mandatory for all full-time faculty and educational administrators. The district and the employees contribute to CalSTRS. Public School Teachers' Pension & Retirement Fund of Chicago (CTPF)

Public School Teachers' Pension & Retirement Fund of Chicago (CTPF) is the administrator of a multi-employer defined benefit public employee retirement system. The state legislature established CTPF to provide retirement, survivor, and disability benefits for certain certified teachers and employees of the Chicago public schools. The fund is also in the process of drafting a corporate governance policy, the accordance with which would be required by any investment managers appointed by CTPF.

Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund

The Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund was created in 1939 by the Illinois General Assembly and began operating in 1941 with 5 original employers and $5,000 in assets. Today IMRF serves almost 3,000 employers.

Since 1941, IMRF has provided employees of local governments and school districts in Illinois (with the exception of the City of Chicago and Cook County) with a sound and efficient system for the payment of retirement, disability, and death benefits.

Teachers' Retirement System of the State of Illinois

Teachers' Retirement System of the State of Illinois (TRS) is governed by an 11-member board of trustees. Trustees include the state superintendent of education, four trustees elected by contributing TRS members, four trustees appointed by the governor, and two trustees elected by TRS annuitants. TRS provides its members with retirement, disability, and survivor benefits.

The president of the board of trustees is the Illinois superintendent of education. The board of trustees elects its vice president from among its members. The board of trustees appoints an executive director who also serves as the secretary of the board of trustees. The executive director is responsible for daily operations at TRS.

New York State Common Retirement Fund includes New York Police and Fire Retirement System (PFRS) with almost 36,000 members and New York Employees' Retirement System (ERS) with more than 643,000 members. There are also roughly 366,000 pensioners and beneficiaries in the fund bringing the total to more than 1,046,000 participants. The pension fund is the third largest in the U.S.

New York City Employees' Retirement System (NYCERS)

New York City Employees' Retirement System (NYCERS) is part of the New York City Retirement System. The other participating plans are Teachers' Retirement System, Police Pension Funds, Fire Department Pension Fund and Board of Education Retirement System. Pennsylvania State Employees' Retirement System

Pennsylvania State Employees' Retirement System (PA SERS) is one of the oldest and largest state-wide retirement plans for public employees in the U.S. PA SERS administers both a defined benefit plan and a defined contribution plan and has over 226,000 members. The defined benefit plan is funded through a combination of employee contributions, and investment earnings.

The role of the committee board of PA SERS with respect to the defined contribution plan (Deferred Compensation Program) is to contract with investment managers and third-party administrators to provide a number of different investment options for participants.

As of June 2012, PA SERS planned to reduce its level of exposure to alternatives. The pension fund planned to gradually reduce its exposure over a ten-year period.
