2021 NAIC LP Meetup Summary

On October 7, 2021, NAIC hosted its 2021 Annual LP Meetup. NAIC virtually convened 55 capital allocators and 62 NAIC general partners and connected them in over 280 one-on-one private meetings. NAIC’s first panel session Moderator was Mina Nazemi, Co-Head of Funds & Co-Investments of Barings who led the “CIO Forecasting: 2022 and Beyond” panel discussion. The first set of panelists included Elizabeth Burton, Chief Investment Officer, Employees’ Retirement System of the State of Hawaii (Hawaii ERS); Joseph Aguilar, Acting Chief Investment Officer, Illinois State Treasury; Amy Chen, Chief Investment Officer, Smithsonian Institution; and Brad Young, Co- Chief Investment Officer, Global Markets, Mercer.

NAIC’s next session Moderator was Mehdi Khodadad, Sidley Austin, Partner, who introduced the second panel discussion, “Re-evaluating Portfolios during a Global Pandemic.” The panel included representatives of four NAIC member firms: Avinash Amin, Managing Partner, Madryn Asset Management; Ivelisse Simon, Co-Founder & Managing Partner, Avante Capital Partners; Ted Yun, Managing Partner, NexPhase Capital; and Ray Whiteman, Managing Partner, Stellex Capital Management

Learn from general partners, consultants and CIOs from some of the largest pension plans on strategies to increase capital commitments for diverse managers.

One-on-One Meetings

The LP Meetup creates opportunities for institutional investors (LPs) to meet directly with NAIC members in 15-minute one-on-one virtual meetings. These meetings provide a chance to make introductions and set the foundation for long-standing relationships. GPs can expect up to five one-on-one sessions at any given LP Meet Up.

NAIC members will be matched with LPs based on preference and LP investment parameters. Meetings will be held via Zoom according to a predetermined schedule.

Panel Session I: “CIO Forecasting 2022 & Beyond
After almost two years of living with the threats and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, governments and businesses continue to explore and implement strategies to bring employees back to work safely, shift office policies to address safety concerns, and approach business from hybrid workplaces. Additionally, the ongoing uncertainties regarding the future of COVID-19 and its variants have left investors grappling with unknown risks. This panel session will inquire of some of the nation’s leading CIOs about their current and longer-term investment strategies, risk mitigation policies, and areas of interest across the alternative asset classes.
