NAIC’s federal initiatives involve continued engagement with CIOs of the Federal Agency pension plans, hosting federal briefings, and developing initiatives and programs for Federal Agencies to incorporate more diverse and Emerging managers across their pension plans and establish programs and separate account allocations, where diverse and Emerging managers may more actively participate.

Developed by the NAIC and the Private Equity Growth Capital Council (PEGCC), the long-term goal of the Private Equity Women’s Initiative is to increase the number of competitive women candidates in the hiring process and to retain more talented women as they rise to senior ranks at private equity firms.

NAIC has identified a list of 11 large public pension plans. These plans all actively invest in the Alternative Asset class (private equity, real estate and hedge funds) but invest very little if any of their assets with diverse-owned firms. The objective is to leverage constant communication, peer outreach, and targeted media strategies to create an interest or develop a need to engage with diverse-owned asset managers.

While supplier diversity and employment diversity have enjoyed wide adoption and great success across corporate America, the use of diverse asset managers to invest pension fund or balance sheet capital has lagged significantly. NAIC, in collaboration with the New York City Comptroller’s Office, a major shareholder in thousands of publicly traded companies, has established a process to target a number of the largest companies and expand their knowledge and awareness of the many positive attributes of investing with diverse managers.





Diverse Asset Managers Initiative (DAMI)

NAIC has joined a consortium of financial services professionals, institutional investors, corporate and philanthropic board members, and trade associations committed to raising awareness among public, corporate, faith and labor union pension fund investors about the benefits and opportunities of investing funds with diverse asset managers. A highly regarded political think tank and advocacy firm has been retained to develop and coordinate the campaign strategy and execute the Diverse Asset Managers Initiative (DAMI), a multi-year initiative. NAIC holds a seat on the governing board and is helping to guide the DAMI’s strategy and outreach.
