2016 Annual Highlights

Nearly 300 investment managers, chief investment officers, limited partners, policymakers gathered on October 3-4, 2016 to attend the NAIC Annual Private Equity & Hedge Fund Conference at Bank of America Tower in New York City. Highlights of the premier thought leadership event in alternative asset investing included an exciting welcome reception where the NAIC honored industry leaders, insightful panel discussions and networking opportunities.

The event kicked off with an exciting welcome reception at the beautiful Pan Asiatic-themed TAO Downtown. During the evening, several awards were bestowed upon individuals whose accomplishments have set themselves apart in the industry.

The NAIC bestowed the Rising Star Award (which recognizes young professionals who are leading the way in the industry with their talent, dedication and expertise) to Brinda Cherian, Vice President, First Atlantic Capital. The Chairman’s Award for Leadership (which recognizes an individual who has exhibited outstanding, innovative and visionary leadership in their career while demonstrating an understanding of the value of diversity in the investment community) went to Laurie Weir, Investment Director, Targeted Investment Programs, CalPERS. The NAIC Award of Excellence (which is presented to the individual whose singular efforts and professionalism personify excellence resulting in increased access to capital in our industry) went to Kelly M. Williams, Senior Advisor, Investments-Private Markets, GCM Grosvenor.
The following day’s panel discussions began with CIO Insight: A Look Ahead, in which leading public, private and foundation plan sponsors discussed their strategies and provided insight into the challenges and great successes within and state of the private equity and hedge fund industry. Insights on Navigating the New Presidential Administration Regardless of which Party Wins in November, which featured guest speakers Jamal Simmons, Political Analyst and Media Advisor; and Michael Steele, Former Chairman of the Republican National Committee, focused on clear approaches to working with the new presidential administration, regardless of which party occupy the White House.

In Engaging the Labor Unions -- The Trillion Dollar Opportunity, the country’s largest labor unions -- the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) discussed the labor sector’s interest and commitment to investment manager diversity and how they are working with Diverse Asset Manager Initiative (DAMI) to increase the diversity of asset managers. Representatives from the investment divisions of global corporations detailed their market outlooks, portfolio management, the investment manager selection processes, and their experience with emerging and diverse managers in Corporate Investments with Diverse Managers.

Three separate Institutional Investor Briefings offered a look into the Private Equity Women’s Initiative, investment strategies and outlooks. These sessions were led by Craig Fowler, Managing Director, HarbourVest Partners; Kelly Williams, Chair, Private Equity Women Investor Network; and William G. Clark, Senior Vice President and Chief Investment Officer, Federal Reserve Employee Benefits System.
Investment Consultants: Demystifying the Process and the Notion of the Gatekeeper provided an in-depth look at the inner workings of consulting firms, their thoughts on the emerging manager and diverse marketplace. Another discussion, Going Direct via Co-Investments explained how co-investments are playing a more important role in the private equity industry.

The final session of the day, We've Got Alpha: Recognizing Outperformance of Diverse Managers, offered insight into how top-notch investment teams drove alpha by way of stellar deal-making and delivering superb risk adjusted performance since launch.
Following a presentation where the NAIC honored One Rock Capital Partners and Hollis Park Partners L.P for delivering superior returns, leadership at those firms answered questions from a panel of LPs. This interactive discussion provided attendees with greater insight into how their strategies delivered those returns.
